If you saw my previous blog post about a really good spam email that nearly got me you’ll know that writing about these can be really beneficial! Lots of people seem to Google the name/email address of the spammer, and they find my blog. Hopefully I’ve managed to help people avoid losing lose money, and the comments on my previous blog certainly seem to show that.
Anyway, this spammer isn’t quite as cunning, and I’ve seen a few like it over the years. However, they do seem to tailor the email to the business of the person that they’re sending it to. In my case, I’m a printer, so he’s asking for a price on printed PVC banners.
Who is this chap, I hear you ask?

That’s his email address, and as you might imagine, he’s calling himself Ronald Erickson. His email goes like this:
Attention: Owner/Sales.
I’m Ronald Erickson, regards to your company to order some Banners. Below is the information of the Banner:
Text: LET’S FIGHT HIV/AIDS NOT THE PEOPLE! STOP THE STIGMATIZATION !
Font Style: Clarendon Serifs Font
Size: 12’ft height x 8’ft width
Material: Durable 13oz
Printed Side: Front Only
Grommets: Every 2 feet
Finish: Hemmed Edges
Pocket Pole: No Pocket Pole
I will appreciate if you can email me with the price for 20 banners without shipping, also I will like to know the form of payment you do accept so we can proceed on with the order ASAP.

So how does the scam work? Well, you send him a price and he agrees to it – say £100. Then he offers to pay via bank transfer. Then he “accidentally” overpays you by a vast amount (say £300), and you refund the difference (£200). All sorted, or so you may think. But then, in a week or so, the bank flags the original transaction as fraudulent and take all of the money back from you (£300). The scammer gets away with the money that you refunded to him (£200), and you are short by the same amount (£200) at the end of it all. Worst of all, your banners will be printed and sat on the shelf ready to collect…
